MRI for breast screening07/06/2010 |
My mother and grandmother both had breast cancer at 65 (grandmother died of this). My mamogram shows punctate calcifications, no clusters, and moderately dense breasts. Should I be doing screening MRI besides yearly mamograms? I am 51.
You do not need screening MRI. The current recommendations for annual mri is a lifetime risk, based on family history, of 20-25% or higher. Based on your family history and using the Claus model to estimate your risk, your risk of getting breast cancer by the age of 79 is about 15%. Your risk to age 49 was about 4%, so your residual risk is about 11% between now and age 79. The average woman faces a 10-12% lifetime risk of breast cancer.
