Itching in the penile area without a rash

07/22/2010

Question:

My son gets bouts of itching. He is not in nappies anymore. He has been treated for fungal infection also, but he still gets these bouts and his penis is erect during that time. He gets this a few times in a day. This has made life miserable for that poor fellow as he gets very frustrated. He was circumsised a month after the birth. I have been taking him to GPs but they also dont know what to do with him. There is no rash apparently. Please help me. I am very desperate.

Answer:

This is a difficult question to answer, as generally there is no obvious cause. It could be the detergent that is used to wash his underwear. Alternatively, his soap may be causing irritation. Another possible cause is dry skin. I do not know why it is associated with erections. There are some creams that contain a local anesthetic (prescription) that might be helpful by making the area numb. Another option might be to apply a small amount of a mild corticosteroid cream to the area that is itching. Finally, if these fail, it might be helpful to take a small dose of Benadryl (diphenhydramine).
