Bleeding and Clotting Disorders

Bruising

02/03/2011

Question:

I was recently diagnosed with ITP with platelets ranging from 69k to 105k. Last week, I had a fall and badly bruised my legs. Even my mum was shocked at how I could get myself so badly bruised. However, last night I saw a bruise-like mark about the size of my fist, right beside a real bruise. It looked like a bruise, but actually isn`t an injury.

What can it be actually? Can it be due to ITP?

Answer:

Even though your platelet count is not extremely low, you can still bruise more than normal. Mild brusing would not be a major concern. If it were more severe, I would encourage you to be seen by your physician to look into the issue more deeply and recheck the blood counts.
