I recently had a CTA scan for possible aortic disease which found a 2mm noncalcified nodule in lower right lobe laterally. I had breast cancer in 1986 resulting in no cancer since. My oncologist recommends another CTA scan in three months. There is no other indication of disease. I stopped smoking ~ 37 years ago. Should I be troubled by this new finding?

Answer:

Thank you for your question. The majority of incidental lung nodules tend to be benign. However, given your previous history of malignancy and the uncertainty as to the chronicity of this nodule, it is reasonable to conduct some form of surveillence. You should dicuss with your oncologist the frequency of CT scans particularly given the small size of the nodule. Guidelines exist for lung nodule surveillence.
