How Do You Gain Stamina?

04/11/2011

Question:

I’m a quarterback for my school and summer workouts are coming up. I want to have the stamina to withstand running in the harsh heat. So what can I do to gain that stamina?

Answer:

You should begin by gradually increasing activity throughout the coming months so that you are prepared when the summer workouts arrive.  Keeping your fitness level up year round will allow you to have the stamina you need to get through the workouts.  Proper rest and nutrition are also important.

Another important factor to consider is getting acclimatized to the heat once the summer gets here.  Again, a gradual increase in workouts is warranted here.  The workouts should be lighter, have frequent breaks, and allow for plenty of hydration (before, during, and after) so that the body can gradually become accustomed to the heat and humidity.
