My Milk Ducts

06/08/2011

Question:

On my left breast it looks as if my milk ducts are disapearing.  Is that possible?

Answer:

Thanks for the interesting question. Milk ducts are permanent structures in the breast that are more dilated or evident when one is establishing nursing after a baby is born. There are also structures called Montgomery’s tubercles which are small glands around the nipple that provide a protective secretion for the nipple during nursing. These structures are less noticeable later in the nursing period or after nursing is finished. The milk ducts are still there, they just aren’t as noticeable. It’s hard to give you specific information without seeing you and observing what you are seeing. If it’s still concerning you, please make an appointment with your provider so you can ask the questions and get information that is specific to your concern. Hope this helps. All the best.
