Enlarged Lymphnodes and Heavy Feeling Breasts

11/29/2011

Question:

At times my breasts feel heavy like after I gave birth. My doctor gave me meds to dry the milk up, but they feel like they weigh 100lbs. I have history of follicular thyroid cancer and I have enlarged lymphnodes under my arms, breast, and neck. I have also been dx with cyst on breasts and ovaries. Every time I go to the doctor he tells me not to worry, that it`s my body fighting an infection. If this is the case wouldn`t the infection take over me seeing that I don`t recieve meds to help fight it off?

Answer:

Thanks for your interesting question. It’s a bit hard to give you the most accurate advice as I don’t have a really good history, but I do have some suggestions.

One, are you wearing a bra that really fits well? If it’s your old bra then it might be causing discomfort.

Two, do you do breast exams? Do you feel anything different than you felt last month? If so, you need to bring that to the attention of your provider.

Three, I’m not sure when it was you gave birth and if it was recently if you are nursing. That could also account for the heavy feeling in your breasts.

The lymph nodes could be concerning if they’ve been there a long time, are tender or reddened, and if they feel like buckshot. This would be an indication that you need further evaluation. If you have symptoms of fever, unusual discharge from your breast (or anywhere else) redness, tenderness or unusual sores, then you need to go to the provider and get them assessed. Hope this helps All the best.
