10/25/2011

Question:

About once a week I expierence pain in my lower back(both sides) ans pain in teticles and lower abdomen (both sides). I urinate about every 25 – 30 minutes all day and my flow is strong and then weak. I urinate even more often as I drink water. I also experience being thirsty after getting up in the morning. Have a appt with a urologist but it is a month away. I am very concerned about what might be going on?

Answer:

I cannot answer your questions for sure without knowing a little more information, such as your age, when the symptoms first appeared, and whether they are getting worse with time.

If you are over the age of 40, you may have an enlarged prostate gland, which can cause a weak urine stream and symptoms of frequent urination.  If the blockage is severe enough, it may even cause discomfort in the lower abdomen and testicles.  Some of the symptoms that you describe can also be caused by decreased kidney function, which can be a result of kidney damage by diabetes or high blood pressure.

Do you have a family doctor?  If so, you could discuss your symptoms with him/her.  Your doctor may then wish to order some basic tests, such as a urinalysis, basic metabolic panel, and maybe a renal ultrasound exam, even before you see the urologist next month.
