White Patch

10/26/2011

Question:

About 2 to 3 months ago I noticed a white patch near my clitoris. I went to my local clinic and have been told I have no STIs or infections. When I showed the nurses at the clinic she had never seen it before so had to get the doctor, he also didn`t know but said I would need a biopsy. I have it booked in but I`m really worried. Do you have any suggestions as to what this may be?

Answer:

Thanks for the interesting question! There are several things that can cause this. It could be an area that has been constantly irritated and those areas usually turn either red or white.

Of course, a common concern is a malignancy and that’s why it is so good that you have that biopsy scheduled. No one can tell just by looking. You don’t say how old you are and if you have other skin issues- that could also influence the diagnosis.

The major thing is to get the biopsy done and have it read by a pathologist who is accustomed to reading these kinds of slides. Feel free to ask your provider about how she or he communicates results and plans for care if more intervention is indicated. All the best!
