Francis S. Collins, MD, PhD currently serves as director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and is the former director of the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI). Dr. Collins spearheaded the successful completion of the Human Genome Project and was a 2007 recipient of the nation’s highest civil award, the Presidential Medal of Freeodm, for his groundbreaking work in genetic research.

In honor of the City Club of Cleveland’s anniversary marking 100 years of free speech, Dr. Collins returned to the forum on November 11, 2011 to discuss the current and changing research climate in the United States of America. His most recent visit comes fifteen years after his previous talk at the City Club of Cleveland, which discussed the revolutionary progress of the Human Genome Project as it stood in 1996.
