Someone who’s diagnosed with diabetes has blood sugar (glucose) levels that are a lot higher than normal. This can be caused by a lack of insulin or because the body’s not able to use the insulin well. Type 2 diabetes develops most often in middle-aged and older adults but can appear in young people too. Diabetics almost always have “pre-diabetes“ before they are diagnosed.
